The missions of charitable food programs have historically emphasized meeting immediate basic needs in hunger alleviation, there has been growing interest among public health planners and policy makers in the use of these community assets for community-based health promotion programs. As an executive leader in a Food Bank (FB), I represent a key decision maker within the charitable food system and play an important role in developing, implementing, and enforcing organizational policies. Executive leaders shape organizational practices, policy, and culture through their own beliefs, values, and attitudes, and within the non-profit setting, these characteristics may be of even greater consequence on organizational culture than for-profit corporations. For example, an FB executive’s values of customer service and systems improvement, which led to gains in staff and volunteer productivity in the areas of food safety, number of clients served, and hours of operation. Thus, FB executive perceptions on the relationships between hunger and health, and the resulting implications for food banking, may similarly provide insights into how FB-initiated health promotion policies and programs are formed, implemented, and institutionalized (Wetherill et al., 2019). Equity, diversity, and inclusion are critical in a food bank. As a leader, I am required deepen my understanding of and perspective on the challenges facing those I serve, many of which are rooted in long-standing patterns of social inequities, exclusions, and divisions.
